Samuel Blaser was first attracted to the trombone after being enthralled by a marching band performing near his hometown of La Chaux de Fonds in Switzerland when he was only two years old. His genuine enthusiasm for the trombone is palpable to this day and can be felt even as Blaser performs some of the most sophisticated and elegant music since the instrument’s heyday during Albert Mangelsdorff’s reign. Blaser’s new European based project, featuring the incredible French guitarist Marc Ducret and the versatile Danish drummer Peter Bruun, confirms that he is an artist who overflows with daring ideas and concepts. Taking the adventurous step of melding written material with improvisation, Blaser creates a new musical world with inventive instrumentation and unsurpassed skill which is at once familiar and yet startlingly fresh and compelling.
Guitarist Marc Ducret was born in Paris in 1957. As a self-taught musician, he began to work in various groups (dance and folk included), and in some studios before he was 20. In 1986, he became a member of the first French National Jazz Orchestra. Also in the late ’80s, Ducret led his own trio and touredEurope, Africa, and Asia. In 1991, he began working with Tim Berne and went on to play with Berne in Caos Totale, Bloodcount, and Big Satan. Ducret has several solo recordings to his credit, released on Berne’s Screwgun label and the Winter & Winter label. In the late ’90s, Ducret formed a tentet ”Seven Songs” to explore music of the ’60s.
Peter Bruun has been playing drums since he went to a children music school at the age of 3. And the study of drums sounds and composition is still an ongoing process. During his carrier he has constantly been searching for original and personal ways of making music, both in his playing and as a composer, writing and playing with both clasical and jazz-musicians. In the last few years you could hear Peter in concert and recordings: Marc Ducret Quintet (FR/DK) ”Real Thing #1”, Django Bates trio ”Belovèd (UK/DK/SE)”, “Mold” (DK/DE), “Stork” (DK/SV), Evan Parker, Chris Speed, Herb Robertson, Andrea Parkins, Jesper Zeuthen, Lotte Anker, Tim Berne, Eggs LAid By Tigers (DK) and others. Peter has been teaching at the Rytmic Conservatorium in Copenhagen and Århus and different workshops in improvisation and ”intuitive polyrythm”.
