Born in Tokyo in January 1950, Eiichi Hayashi began playing the saxophone in a brass band during his middle school years.
For about 10 years after graduation, he played bebop and R&B in cabaret house bands and his own groups, but as these weren’t prominent activities, he was known only to insiders as the “phantom alto saxophonist”.
There’s an anecdote that as a high school student, he spontaneously joined Yosuke Yamashita Trio for a performance at the Shinjuku Pit Inn. In 1981, he coincidentally reunited with Yosuke Yamashita and joined the then Yosuke Yamashita Trio as a “plus one” member. Although the group disbanded in 1983, their European tour performances were released as the live album In Europe 1983.
In 1990, he formed his own band MAZURU. They performed at the Nuremberg Jazz Festival in Germany, receiving great acclaim. Subsequently, he collaborated with Junko Onishi, Soushi Akitagawa, Aki Takase, Takeo Moriyama, and others. Around this time, he began appearing on more albums, allowing his unique sound to reach many listeners. Besides performing, he also extensively composed and arranged music. Among his works, “Naadam” has become a signature tune for Shibusashirazu Orchestra.
Hayashi’s diverse musical persona can be heard in various projects, including the Tsuyoshi Shibuya Orchestra, the duo De Ga Show with Hiroaki Katayama, a duo with Fumio Itabashi, and Gatos Meeting, a band with young jazz musicians.
